The Yankton County Historical Society is asking for your help. Your mission should you choose to accept it will be to help us find a very special portrait. In the early 1900s, Louis Janousek painted a portrait of Dr. Leonard C. Mead that hung somewhere at the Yankton State Hospital. The current location of this painting is unknown. If you or someone you know has seen this or any of the paintings that once hung on the walls of the Yankton State Hospital buildings, please let us know. The YCHS and University of South Dakota would like to have the entire collection of more than 300 pieces identified and marked if they are available for public view or in a private collection. Join us at the Mead Cultural Education Center this weekend as we open an art exhibit featuring 28 of the original oil paintings and watercolors that once graced the walls. The Yankton State Hospital Artwork Exhibit is a partnership with the University of South Dakota. Don’t forget about our Vendor Fair this weekend also! Doors will be open 10am-6pm Saturday and 10am-5pm Sunday – a free-will donation admission will be offered this weekend only. It is a great time to visit the Mead Cultural Education Center and see what is new! Check out our calendar of events at www.meadbuilding.org, or you can stop out at the Mead Cultural Education Center at 82 Mickelson Drive. Our summer hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm (closed Wednesdays) and Sunday 1pm-5pm. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
